The Seiji Isomoto Scholarship
The Seiji Isomoto Scholarship is awarded to deserving scholar-athletes who will be graduating from a school in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Last year we had three young ladies that were awarded scholarships. Their information can be found below. Please view all the past recipients of our scholarship.
2013 Scholarship Recipients
Elizabeth Celaya
Elizabeth, or “Bethie” as she likes to be called, is the essence of a scholar-athlete. She graduates from San Dimas High School with a 3.98 GPA as the star pitcher of their softball team. For the past three years she was voted first team, All Valle Vista League, and All San Dimas Tournament Team. Academically, Bethie was First Team All Academic, and a scholar athlete all four years. Bethie’s father introduced her to softball at the age of 4. Sadly, her Dad passed away last year but their shared love for the game has given her strength to help her to deal with her family’s loss. Her coach praises her leadership style, her courage and poise under pressure. Bethie’s strong work ethic and passion for learning has her bound for UC San Diego in the fall where she will pursue a career in the medical field.
Taylor Tanita
Graduating in the top 5% of her class at Culver City High School with a 4.1 GPA, Taylor is not only an outstanding student but an accomplished basketball player. Named Ocean League MVP, First Team All CIF, All-Tournament MVP, among other honors, Taylor led her team to its first CIF Southern Section final in twenty years scoring a last second game winner to send her team to the Championship. A 4-year scholar athlete, she is also on the Principal’s Honor Roll and a California Scholarship Federation member. Taylor volunteers with a non-profit organization that creates self-sustaining jobs for people in underdeveloped countries. She has committed to play basketball at UC San Diego where she plans to major in math or economics.
Kylie Mizushima
Kylie has one of the most impressive letters of recommendation we’ve seen. Called a leader amongst her peers, her Honors English teacher praises her writing skills as well as her maturity, personality, dedication, and sincerity. A four-year varsity player on the Palisades Charter High School Team, she was All Western League member, a Los Angeles All City Section nominee, and All Tournament selection. She graduates Palisades on the Principal’s Honor Toll, an AP Scholar Award recipient and interestingly, a first place award in the Japanese Speech Contest. She is talented shamisen player and sings Minyo, both traditional Japanese music forms, frequently performing at the Keiro Senior Center. Kylie will attend a California State University in the fall and would like to become a sports trainer.
